Mozambique ruby, primarily sourced from the Montepuez deposit in Cabo Delgado, is one of the most sought-after variants of natural ruby. Mozambique rubies have emerged as a key player in the gemstone market since their discovery in 2009. It has eaten up the major market share of old Burma rubies to a great extent because of affordability and deep red hues. These rubies, formed in amphibolite and marble-hosted deposits, owe their vivid red hue to high chromium content, often with moderate to high iron, which can slightly mute fluorescence compared to Burmese rubies. Their color ranges from deep crimson to pinkish-red, with clarity varying from transparent to opaque, often requiring heat treatment to enhance vibrancy and remove inclusions. The Gemfields-operated Montepuez mine, one of the largest ruby deposits globally, produces stones rivaling Myanmar’s famed Mogok rubies. However, political instability and ethical concerns, including artisanal miner displacement, have sparked debate. Advanced spectroscopy, like UV-Vis and FTIR, is used to distinguish Mozambique rubies from synthetics or other origins, focusing on trace element signatures.
