What is Kyanite Stone?

Kyanite is a blue or a bluish-grey microcrystalline variety of muscovite mica. It is used as an ornamental stone and as a gemstone. Kyanite has been found in Russia, Canada, France, Norway, Greenland, Mozambique and Madagascar; throughout North America; and also in Brazil, Nigeria and South Africa. The name comes from its blue colour that results from impurities of iron; ky'an (from Chinese quán). The chemical formula for kyanite is Al2SiO5(OH)4. Kyanite crystals occur as very slender parallel to elongated grains or in more rounded masses with ragged edges in plates and tufts.

Where does it come from?

Kyanite is named after Mt. Kya-Nyain, a volcano in Siberia where it was originally discovered in 1869. Since then, it has been found all over the world and mined from countries including Brazil, Malawi, Myanmar (Burma), and India. Its crystals are trigonal crystal systems - meaning they have three axes of unequal length intersecting at right angles to form six-sided pyramids. This gives kyanite six faces like a cube or octahedron with blunt 90-degree corners. The colour of kyanite is its most notable characteristic, with hues that range from pale blue to emerald green to dark blue and even black!

Properties of Kyanite Stone

Kyanite is an interesting and beautiful crystal. Kyanite is a member of the Silicate group, most notable for its dark blue, indigo or teal colour. It has a vitreous lustre (which means it looks smooth and glassy) that can be somewhat translucent or transparent. It is considered to be both a semi-precious gemstone and to be a type of mineral since it occurs naturally in crystalline masses in volcanic rocks as well as in limestone deposits all over the world. As an interesting side note, Kyanite sometimes also comes in black with white stripes which can look like a tiger’s eye if you know what that looks like.
