About Natural Larimar

Natural larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in a small area of San Andres Island, Colombia. It gets its name from Larissa, daughter of a Colombian geologist who discovered it during an expedition in 1972. She later married Ignacio Buitrago and became Larimar Buitrago. Pectolite was first discovered in 1974 by George DeVilliers, and as a result, he gave it its current name; pesto comes from Greek and means to comb while -lite refers to stone. Contrary to other green stones like peridot or chrysoprase, larimar is not olivine but rich in silica.

Why larimar is special?

Larimar is an unusual material in that it has two very different appearances depending on what side of it you look at. The side with a white or greyish colouration typically faces downward, toward earth, and draws us down to our emotions. The side with a deep-blue or violet colouration typically faces up toward heaven, reminding us of our divine connection to source energy. Natural larimar's therefore represented a beautiful union of opposites: we can access both sides and walk-in balance between them.

The meaning behind the name larimar

Larimar was named after an island off of Colombia, and a mineral found there. The word larimar is a combination of two Spanish words Larina, meaning gypsum, and mar meaning sea; so it literally means Sea Gypsum. In English, it’s called Stefilia’s Stone.

Bright future for a bluestone

One of nature’s most lovely surprises is larimar, a Caribbean gemstone that has risen to fame over recent years. While it was discovered in a Dominican mine decades ago, it’s now being mined in other parts of Central America. While rare, you can buy larimar jewellery online and bring its beauty into your home! It owes its distinctive blue colour to its chemical makeup, which is similar to aquamarine; it’s made up primarily of calcium and aluminium.
